Special Directions for Short Season Climates
SOWING: Sow seeds outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Or start in flats earlier indoors 4 to 6 weeks before last frost. Cover seed with 1/8 inch fine soil.
SPACING: Leave about 12 to 18 inches between rows or use in group plantings,
THINNING AND TRANSPLANTING: Thin or transplant seedlings 8 to 10 inches apart outdoors when 2 to 3 inches tall after danger of frost has passed and weather has warmed. Avoid over thinning to keep the widest selection of different varieties, some of which may not grow as quickly orbe as hardy starting as others.
GERMINATION: 2 to 3 weeks depending upon weather and soil conditions. Keep soil moderately moist during germination.
Ed's Special Advice
Select a sunny location with fairly rich well drained soil, kept somewhat moist. Be patient, don't plant basil outdoors too early in spring if weather is cool and wet. Save seeds from packet for successive sowings every 3 to 4 weeks. Pinch back plants to encourage bushiness and discourage flowering. Use leaves sparingly at first, more so as plants mature.
