Special Directions for Short Season Climates SOWING: Start seed early indoors or seed directly outdoors from early to mid spring. Sow again in late summer for fall crop. Cover with 1/8 inch fine soil. THINNING: When seedling plants are established, thin to 10 or 12 inches apart. Replant thinned seedlings. TRANSPLANTING: Seedlings started indoors can be planted outside after hardening off and danger of severe frost has passed. SPACING: Leave 15 to 18 inches between rows. For intensified gardening, space 10 to 12 inches apart in all directions. GERMINATION: Approximately 1 week to 10 days. Seed germinates best in cool 55 to 60-degree weather. Ed's Special Advice Well-fertilized soil produces quickly-grown, crisp lettuce. Keep moderately moist. Sow seeds every 2 weeks from March to August for continued harvest. Lettuce grows best during the cooler part of the growing season.
